A guy sat near meThe flight was about to take off when a guy my age rushed onto the plane. He plunked into an aisle seat and settled in. Lights dimmed, and the movie started. Six months later, I quit my job, moved to California, and started life as a freelance consultant. I've never returned to corporate work and still have a soft spot for that in-flight movie, "A Simple Twist of Fate."

And Cinépolis, a theater chain that offers a "luxury movie-going" experience, recently caught my eye. It was available at my local AMC, but Cinépolis has about half the screens, so it can't show every movie in theaters. I bought my ticket on the Cinépolis site on Friday afternoon for a showing that night. At my local AMC, I can control the recline of the footrest and chair back separately, which makes for a more comfortable experience. When broken down, each movie ticket is about $2.

A Latam Airlines Boeing 787 dropped midair Monday, injuring at least 50 people. If true, that would be reminiscent of when a military Airbus A330 suddenly nose-dived in 2014. A pilot-seat mishap sent a military Airbus A330 plummetingTen years ago, on February 9, 2014, a Royal Air Force Airbus A330 plummeted 4,400 feet in about 30 seconds. The Boeing 787 system involved has a fly-by-wire system, but instead of a side-stick, the planemaker has installed the traditional yoke. A Singapore Airlines Boeing 787 flight simulator shows the fly-by-wire system uses a yoke instead of the Airbus' side-stick.

I used points from credit-card bonuses to travel first class on Emirates and had a luxurious flight. AdvertisementAfter years of low-budget traveling, my fiancé and I decided to use airline points and flew in Emirates first class from the Maldives to Dubai. Without miles, this first-class flight is usually about $3,000. I used to think flying first class was reserved for the wealthyFlying in Emirates first class was a luxurious experience for me. I wouldn't spend actual money on it, but redeeming our miles for this luxurious first-class experience felt like the best use of our points.

Like yellow Starbursts, we all deal with the middle seat, but most of us don't prefer it. I now kneel at the altar of the middle seat, and you should, too. The stigma around middle seats has meant aisle and window passengers tend to give those stuck there more space. Middle seats are cheaperPerhaps you're still not sold on the middle. If you have a middle seat in a four-seater, may God have mercy on your soul.

Here are the 'unwritten rules' of air travel

A new report has an ominous warning for air travelers. "No matter what you do on a plane, you're probably annoying another passenger," it states. "When the unwritten rules of airlines etiquette are broached, it can lead to conflict," writes Lindsey Roeschke, a travel and hospitality analyst at Morning Consult who authored the report. Nearly one in five respondents said concerns about other passengers' behavior may deter them from taking a trip. Some 77% of people in the survey said they were "bothered" by it, with 51% saying they were "very bothered."

The new first-class seat for narrow-body domestic flights features better technology like armrest wireless charging stations and winged headrests. United and rivals like Delta Air Lines and JetBlue Airways have upgraded their business- or first-class seats in recent months to create more privacy and more room for customers willing to pay a premium to fly. Last year, Delta debuted domestic first-class seats that also feature privacy wings at the top of the seat, while JetBlue redesigned its Mint class to offer seats with sliding doors. The new United first-class seat will first appear on a Boeing 737 this month. The seats will feature three kinds of charging: wireless, a USB-C and an AC outlet.

The Man Who Pictured Ghana’s Rise at Home and Abroad

The 94-year-old British-Ghanaian photographer James Barnor calls himself “Lucky Jim” — he’s been “at the right place at the right time and met the right people” during a career spanning more than six decades and two continents, he said in a recent telephone interview from his London home. It’s easy to believe him looking at “James Barnor: Accra/London,” a major retrospective of his work across genres — studio and street photography, photojournalism and fashion, images that range from the quietly intimate to the historical and iconic. Shown at the Serpentine Galleries in London in 2021, the exhibition is on view in an expanded form at the Detroit Institute of Arts, through Oct. 15. Take a modest picture by Barnor from 1952 of Roy Ankrah, a Commonwealth featherweight boxing champion. Barnor posed the three on Nkrumah’s couch — and then jumped into the frame, perching on an armrest, becoming part of a momentous history unfolding.

How to Stay Calm During a Bumpy Flight

On a recent flight to Chicago, Allison Levy said she was “white-knuckling” the armrest as the plane rumbled and shook for brief periods of time. Ms. Levy, 47, who lives in Arlington, Va., started to take deep breaths and tried to reassure herself: “It’s like a bumpy road — it’s not a big deal.”But, she added, “if I knew the person next to me, I’d definitely grip their thigh.”Airplane turbulence, which is usually caused by large changes in airflow in the Earth’s upper atmosphere, is generally a minor nuisance. But this year alone, there have been multiple instances of severe turbulence on flights that have led to dozens of passenger injuries. And scientists have warned that we may have bumpier flights in the years ahead because of elevated carbon dioxide emissions that are warming the atmosphere, which can alter the speed and direction of the wind.

But the willingness by Universal to experiment — to challenge the “this is how we’ve always done it” thinking — seems to have paid off. Universal has generated more than $1 billion in premium V.O.D. revenue in less than three years, while showing little-to-no decrease in ticket sales. In some cases, box-office sales even increased when films became available in homes, which Universal has decided is a side effect of premium V.O.D. Universal, for instance, made “Minions: The Rise of Gru” available for premium V.O.D.

Flying first class for the first time has convinced me that it's worth the money for longhaul flights. I've been flying my entire life — to the Dominican Republic, to Italy, to Morocco — but it's always been in economy class. That all changed in January when my partner and I were traveling to San Francisco and got upgraded to first class. On our way to the airport, we got a notification that we'd be upgraded from economy to Delta's Comfort+. I got a free upgrade to fly in Delta's first class cabin on a recent flight to San Francisco, California.
On Thursday, the CPSC and Baby Trend warned consumers about a head or neck entrapment risk on the Sit N’ Stand Double and Ultra strollers (model numbers beginning with “SS76” or “SS66”). The joint notice came after the asphyxiation death of a 14-month-old whose neck became trapped between the canopy tube and the armrest of a Baby Trend Sit N’ Stand double stroller. The Sit N’ Stand strollers have been sold since 2009, and Baby Trend said over a million have been sold nationwide. They’re found at Baby Trend, Amazon, Bed Bath & Beyond, Walmart, Target, Kohl’s, and buybuy BABY. Consumers are encouraged to report incidents to the CPSC or to Baby Trend at 800-328-7363 or info@babytrend.com.
A baby was killed and another was injured after they became entrapped in a popular Baby Trend stroller that's sold at retailers like Amazon , Walmart and Buybuy Baby, the Consumer Product Safety Commission announced Thursday. "Baby Trend and the CPSC agree that Sit N' Stand Double and Ultra strollers with detachable canopy are completely safe when used as intended and in accordance with the company's operating instructions," a company spokesperson said. The CPSC and Baby Trend are warning consumers to remove and separately store the canopy when it's not in use and ensure children are always fully secured in the stroller with its built-in five-point harness. Baby Trend is a global manufacturer of products for children that's been in business for more than 30 years, according to company news releases. The Alpha Group is an animation and pan-entertainment platform based in China that started as a toy company.
Writer Tonya Russell traveled to the Maldives and tried out Emirates' business and economy class. "While economy class proved to be just fine, upgrading is worth it at least once," she writes. How to upgrade to business class on an Emirates flightIf you use the same airline family, you may be able to transfer miles from another airline to your Emirates flight. The meat alternative was a chicken TV dinner with rice, which wasn't as appetizing as the salmon that circulated through business class. While economy class proved to be just fine, if upgrading is within your means, it is worth it at least once.
Navigating the world of airports and airplanes at this time can be stressful, but if anyone’s an expert in holiday travel, it’s flight attendants. That said, sometimes flight attendants are only in a destination for 24 hours. Flight attendants support this kind of switching about, but will try not to interfere unless there are issues. And yes, some celebrities have a reputation for being rude, and that reputation will spread among flight attendants. I think a lot of flight attendants would agree with me on that.”What strange things do people leave behind in the cabin?
